At least 1 in 6 children in Ireland, more than 200,000, have been harmed by a parent’s problem drinking. A new Alcohol Action Ireland report sets out what that means at home, and argues for putting children at the heart of alcohol policy. The same harm is hidden in Scotland.

“We specifically chose that building because there were no alcohol sales within the immediate vicinity.” Murray’s Initiative told Glasgow’s licensing board it would have had to move if a convenience store in the same Finnieston building got an alcohol licence. The bid was refused.

“Alcohol harm is not inevitable.” Prof Matthew Ashton, Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, on the city’s new alcohol strategy to 2032, which names support for minimum unit pricing among its five priorities. A policy Scotland has had since 2018, now being argued for in England.
