One of the first things I was taught as a youngster when contributing to hefty papers was that it's not about convincing the critical reviewer, but wearing them out. A war of attrition packed into endless polite sentences, additional analyses and distractions masking as triangulation 😐

2/2 Would it be OK if my review read: sorry, but my time is too valuable to dig through 130 pages of rebuttal. I can not recommend publication of a paper by authors who clearly have zero respect for the reviewers’ hard work.

Recently reviewed a pretty hefty paper for hi end journal. Amazing data but flawed analyses. Revision arrived. Should I be more disturbed that - it took the authors only 2 mo add a ton of new data & analyses, - the journal expects comments in 10 days, or - THE REBUTTAL ALONE RUNS TO 130 PAGES? 1/2

I remember a manuscript where we got 40 Pages of reviews. Our new material was another 40 pages making it 80 with the reviewers comments. Did everything they said, showing we were right and they went. “Oh, that wasn’t the right problem, it is I just don’t believe you”.
