if your thesis is that life is suffering - as the absolute horrible things happening to other characters may suggest - you have got to do something better with it than just list those misfortunes like the ships in the iliad

i think if you have so many horrible things happen to a character to such extremes you have got to think for a moment what has made him so uniquely susceptible to them, your writing has to be interested in it or it just becomes a caricature, frankly

also those sections are unrelenting to a degree where it starts to feel comical and that is some deeply unserious writing
