Inside these ice cores are trapped ancient air bubbles. These will tell us about the climate 900,000 to 1.2 million years ago, meaning we can compare several warming and ice age cycles. It's been done by Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice - a collaboration of European scientists!

This ice is old. Like, *OLD* old 🧊⌛ In search of climate data from 1.2 million years ago, scientists have just sampled some of the oldest ice on earth for the first time! The full ice core is 2.8km long - drilled deep through the thick East Antarctic ice sheet down to bedrock. #climatescience 🧪
