These numbers are also just made up by the provider. A friend of ours got labs done out of network and had a $1000 bill that was sent to them. They called the lab and the lab said they charge $150 if you're w.o insurance, so they just paid that instead.

Still a fucked system that sends this to them so they have to argue with Cigna about it. If Cigna hadn't eventually fixed it, they would have owed $0.5M and had to take them to court, or debt collection and ruined credit, no? Not to mention an out-network provider can walk in at any time.

Why not? Why not point out how insane it is that a new parent with an infant in the NICU ever fucking sees a bill that says $500K? How is that not a system that's just rotten to its core? Like I don't care if it's "not real" in some way. A system that does that to a person is a failed system.
