Taking inspiration from transgender sex workers, many gay men adopted "radical drag," which blurred gender lines by combining extreme symbols of masculinity and femininity. Gold lamé dresses were worn with work boots; pink tutus were paired with Army jackets.

Something I love about safe streets advocacy is that bikes (for me) are: transportation, good for my physical & mental health, a source of community & fun, AND a route to advocacy for a safer, more livable, inclusive & climate-resilient world. To sustain our efforts, we need to balance work & joy.

Over the next few years, finding joy is going to be just as important as resisting fascism & supporting those being attacked. Bikes and the community that fights for better places bring me so much joy, so I will continue to embrace them and all the good things they encourage (even when it's -7 °F).
