beyond not understanding that you retain a benefit — growing equity — that justifies continued taxation, what is happening is that these people don’t understand that their mortgage payment included a property tax payment that went into escrow. that, and simple selfishness, is what’s happening here.

And obviously the upzoning they were opposing would not have arrived in time to actually generate new customers needed to keep the business afloat. But to prioritize backwards ideology over policy that would support your literal workers is just kind of baffling.

I'm not trying to dunk on anyone. Despite my disagreement with them, I still went there as much as before (though I know others did not). For me it's just sad. Kind of the left version of "why are blue collar white people voting against their economic interests?"

ultimately it's shit like this that makes the decline of birth rates and resulting demographic skewing towards old people self-reinforcing. Greedy, wealthy retired people voting to destroy the funding for public services they relied on throughout their life now that they no longer need them
