The very existence of this... thing... means that a good half a million Brits will be sleepless for days. Fortunately none of us do anything productive ordinarily, so the effect on GDP will be minor, but nevertheless.

26-ish episodes a year with mounting panic in the writers' room is always going to see people grabbing a cliché and everybody else shrugging and running with it. One a week six months a year for 7 years, it'll pass by most viewers without comment. Fans and modern rewatchers... less so. We notice!

(This is something SNW got right in the most recent season ender: people noticed that something was wrong with the character affected and addressed it with them, with one even naming the two most likely Star Trek reasons and asking which one was affecting them. Brilliant subversion!)
