Arkansas had to be admitted with Michigan to keep the balance between slave and free states. The border dispute with Ohio also had to be resolved. We got the better deal getting the UP and Ohio got Toledo

Arkansas had to be admitted as a state before Michigan to balance free states vs slave states. Michigan also had to give up the Toledo strip to Ohio and get Northern Michigan in return. Yep, they can have Toledo. BTW my husband graduated from Northern Michigan University.
