I would self-describe as a pacifist but to me pacifism means “I’m not gonna start shit” rather than “I’m not gonna fight”.

Which is not even a little bit how King and the civil rights movement won. They won with direct action, by gumming up the gears of segregation, by boycotting businesses and staging sit ins and marches and being willing to get their asses beaten. State-sanctioned protest isn’t protest.

Also, if you want to argue about the effectiveness of nonviolence and the King vs X stuff - the stuff that King was leading was still *direct action*. There is this idea that MLK made the I Have A Dream speech and a bunch of people marched and then all the racists said “jeepers I guess you win”
