sometimes i get a puzzled “i wasn’t complimenting you,” and i gently explain, “right, i’m saying no thank you to your opinions in general. i don’t need them.” they become enraged; i think it’s more polite than flat out saying “i don’t care,” but 🤷🏼‍♀️

for years now, i’ve responded to unsolicited comments on my appearance from strangers with a polite “oh, no thank you,” and the number of men who are absolutely enraged by this response is… instructive.
