Dec 7, 1942, 13 men in kayaks left a submarine near the mouth of the Gironde Estuary in SW France & had to paddle 100 miles upstream against fierce winter tides, freezing temperatures, and heavy German patrols. All but 2 were killed but the successful mission may have shortened the war by 6 months.
