His problem was that he fulfilled the not-quite-understood fantasy of 1920s women for something dangerous and exotic but what he was genuinely good at was light comedy. Like this scene of him code switching between English and Italian sans sound in COBRA.

Quick Valentino post. I think THE SHEIK is kitschy-problematic fun and THE EAGLE is a genuinely enjoyable adventure romp but so many of his films were absolutely dreadful. This annoyed him and he fought long and hard for better material
