Who'd be dumb enough to sign up for being cannon fodder for a tyrant though? No matter the "see the world and get job skills" bs the military spins, you can still get killed for no good reason. Not worth the 21 gun salute.

I would also credit the poor economy. When you have no jobs available in the private sector people tend to get desperate and resort to joining the military to provide opportunities.
