Idk man... If one of your best friends had been accused of rape, innocent or guilty, I suspect he'd try to explain it to you and get you on his side. You being one of his best friends and all. If you know nothing in your friends' lives that you don't witness, that's a parasocial relationship.

Yeah. You were. Friends, unlike spouses, are usually the FIRST to know. Because the victim considered the feelings of the perpetrator, the power involved, etc. It's always "Hey, I don't want to make a big deal, but this is what Joe did at the Christmas party" His friends are the FIRST STEP.
