One of my favourite things about tomorrow’s first reading (Exodus 33:23) is when Moses asks to see God’s face and God - angry with the Israelites for the golden calf - tells Moses he will only be able to see his “back”. Yet the word God uses actually means “flank / haunches / backside.” /1

2/ I find it deeply amusing that God essentially tells Moses “I’ll let you see my rear-end…consider yourself lucky.” In the Gospel, Jesus shows similar wit with the Pharisees and Herodians, who are trying to entrap him with a question about taxes. I like a sassy God. Like Father. Like Son.

I would take more seriously the people promoting the idea of AI consciousness if they first materially grappled with the (much more obvious) consciousness of animals and how that affects our moral obligations to them.
