I think the word Nazi has become a bit generalized and muted by its regular use and expansion to envelop a variety of terrors we’re experiencing right now. And rightly so! It makes sense. Concurrently, the word deals a very specific kind of psychic damage to Jewish descents of the Holocaust.

Yes, these Nazi salutes are upsetting and scary for everyone at risk without question. At the same time I have names and faced and stories and missing places at my dinner table in direct and recent relation to those gestures.

I’m not trying to play oppression Olympics, I’m just saying if you don’t have family massacred *by Hitler* you cannot possibly imagine what these relentless images of Nazi solutes feels like. It’s a very personal and specific kind of trauma and terror.
