We have to be “critical thinkers”. I found an entry in an 1884 newspaper of an award to my 4th great aunt(accepted by her son-in-law).She was referred to as the “late” postmistress. I have confirmed her death as being in 1886! Maybe “late” referred to her having left the service of the post office?
