I remember it so clearly. Around 10 years ago, we sat around a table and agreed what to cut from field trip travel, careful and responsible decisions, trains not planes. Now we just lit a huge bonfire of planetary resources under every aspect of our work.

As geographers, we were absolutely doing the right thing when we acknowledged the problems of field trips amid a climate crisis. But now our employers are forcefully embedding LLMs into all aspects of our work. Why don’t they think of the tokenized planetary cost like the aviation cost?
