Just seen the following claim: "you can only speak eloquently about things you know well". How do people think children develop language in the first place? It's not 'knowledge first, speech after'. It's about *communication*. Babies can communicate clearly before they ever know any words.

If you are getting "I don't know" from pupils, you don't need to feed them a script to be parroted. You need to show them that you are genuinely interested in what they think and in their own words. The thing making them say "I don't know" is fear of not guessing correctly what you want to hear.
