It quite literally does. The underlying asset has no value except inasmuch as new money comes in, so you constantly have to recruit new investors. Compare to stocks, which have an asset attached. Even beanie babies had a physical asset with some residualvalue.

No, there's no need for fees. Many investment pyramid schemes pay no fees but pay earlier investors fake profits from the later investors capital. Crypto is exactly a pyramid. Its only value is exactly what the next guy will pay you. Even beanie babies have value as a stuffed animal.
