My theory is that the open weights Chinese models are getting so good that the frontier model companies want a “pause” to try and keep their market position frozen in amber. Why pay for ChatGPT or Grok when DeepSeek does all the same stuff for a fifth the total cost?

Dario Amodei, the Anthropic CEO issued a call for a pause on Ai research and within hours Sam Altman and Elon Musk agreed. I feel like something happened they aren't disclosing that spooked them. Musk in particular was saying the safety thing was a psyop to regulate the industry just 2 days ago.
