Sometimes mental health practitioners have spent their time explaining to me that my responses are very normal and expected for a person in my circumstances, that… - reacting defensively to abuse is normal, - shutting down when trapped + terrified + unable to win a physical fight is normal, etc.

What about systems that were built in order to do "harm". Or is that a different category altogether? Those systems aren't broken, they are just designed for immoral ends?
