That's beautiful. I thought I invented bisexuality, and I put myself THROUGH IT. No one ever said it was ok. The closest we got was "queer people can be not practicing and we'll accept them into the church". I had to accept myself. And that meant walking away.

My grandma was raised by a miserable alcoholic and a desperately browbeaten woman who still didn't want her kids to learn Czech or be Catholic, so she had to come up with that compassion herself.

They and their friend founded a branch of the UCC. My grandma was the only person to take me aside as a teen and say "If you are a lesbian, I still love you." (and she MEANT IT.)

forgive me for repeating this story, but: in the 1980s, in uber conservative southern Iowa, my grandma left the Presbyterian church and took my grandpa (whose family had been Presybterian since John Knox) with her, because that church would not allow their friend to be openly gay and a full member.
