The square brackets are generally used in quotes in place of a pronoun in order to clarify the context, in this case replacing "they" with "black women" so the original subject isn't lost

The only one of these quotes that can be saved by context is the empathy one. He says right after that "sympathy" is a better word. I dont agree with the quote outside of that "empathy" may be overused, but theyre both still good terms.

Conservatives getting mad when you reference his quotes, saying "you're taking it out of context" and whatnot, really sums up how little they know about the people they support
