A preview of something we'll be adding soon to our website: wind/solar/etc. records over time. New wind records rarely occur during storms; despite #StormDarragh, this afternoon's wind output of ~3.5GW is a long way from the current all-island record of 4629MW, set last March.

Did the wind really back off so much last night, or was there curtailments?

Probably, but not because of too much wind on the system, as the forecast showed wind was going to decrease as the night went on. More likely wind was dispatched down due to transmission constraints. We have to wait until Monday to confirm what happened.

I also agree regarding BESS vs LDES. BESS is a straightforward technology, relatively easily implemented & is fine for short term fluctuations in demand. (1-2hrs). LDES is +10hrs. Pumped Hydro, for now, is the main LDES system. (accounting for circa 90% of 'storage' worldwide).
