@jeffjetton.bsky.socialWhile not as strapped for memory as the Atari, Acorn, when creating BASIC for the Atom went, Naaah, you don't need 256 bytes of stack, and made $0100-$013F the text input buffer and $0140-$017F a string processing area leaving only 128 bytes for the actual stack. Seemed to work well enough though.
Show PostTo add some fun, the first 128 bytes are actually used for the TIA (Television Interface Adapter) chip, which exposes different registers on read and write. (There are just 48 TIA register addresses, but we get about 3 copies of them. Actually just 2 2/3 copies, but you get the idea.)
Show PostThe remaining 128 bytes are all the RAM there is, also the zero page, and also the stack. On top of this, at $0200, are 256 registers of the RIOT chip, where the RAM actually is. But this isn't where the fun stops, as we get various mirror images of this! So much to choose from! 😀
Show PostEver had a problem loading programs into a ZX81 or ZX Spectrum using a stereo 3.5mm jack? This may be why. Look at the photos, the jack sockets connect to the tip and the ring, not the sleeve. That's fine for a mono TS jack, but a stereo TRS jack connects to left and right, no connection to ground.
