Show PostNewts do not recapitulate what happened in ancient tetrapods, but may use similar mechanisms by convergence. By studying plasticity at the water-to-land interface, we can learn how nervous systems and behaviors are shaped by the different physical forces of terrestrial and aquatic environments. 🧵5/5

Show PostFinal thought: development is not one fixed script. Evolution finds different mechanical solutions to the same morphogenetic problem. Or, more simply: when things get crowded, the beetle finds another dimension. 🪲 #EvoDevo #gastrulation #morphogenesis #development #Drosophila #Tribolium
Show PostAnd when Drosophila is forced into a more beetle-like situation? In tribbles mutants, where mesoderm cells divide prematurely, we also see out-of-plane divisions and delayed furrow formation. So out-of-plane division may be a shared response to dividing in a constricting tissue.
