I - an alcoholic with 8+ years of sobriety under my belt (as of today) - have never heard of this, but it’s not surprising. It’s an all or nothing life. One is too many & a thousand is not enough. To this day I still can’t understand how someone can walk away from a half finished drink.

Seconding Ian’s great point here. I was a “high functioning” alcoholic. Still an alcoholic. I quit a year and a half ago, and it remains one of the best decisions of my life.

Conversely! You don’t have to be in the top decile to have a problem with alcohol, and a non-“hardcore” alcoholic is still an alcoholic
