I think being arbitrarily elected as Great At Everything in music is a hugely gendered area still - men can be auteurs where women must work ten times harder to be more than singers.

In my limited experience, the trick with the US style is being as reasonable with it all as you can be until they hit one of your red lines, and then being politely clear that you'd sooner take it elsewhere than have it published in a form youre not 100% happy with. They tend to accept that.
