Clout has many forms, can be indirect. Media realized there was money and audience in the very cheap use of ordinary voices calling in. That affected our culture. Oprah’s foregrounding of hucksters isn’t quite the same, but she has a LOT to answer for, agree, because SHE had so much clout.
