I think it was largely that he lacked a filter especially at first. He's arguably high functioning autistic. But he has a lot of kindness and eventually learns how to show he cares. Plus his era has a villain named Missy who is extremely popular among fans.

I'd love to go there. I came to his works a bit late, but I've grown very fond of him. I think he is perhaps most popular in his adoptive France. I've always read him in English, but discovered him through French sites.
