Of all the places we’ve been so far, Kyushu seems to have the strongest sense of its own identity within Japan: ~150 years after the Satsuma Rebellion, the Shimazu clan crest is everywhere, as is Saigō Takamori: on t-shirts, towels, onsen adverts, PSAs, cookies, the works.

I will be spending the next 3 hours aboard a 747 but it was minimal hassle to catch, no security queue/baggage checks, you can turn up 1 min before it leaves, and there is loads of legroom
