I think you have to rely on some sort of external shock on the one hand, or Cartesian doubt followed by access to the pure light of reason on the other. Honestly think the latter is more likely to work, since even if you get the former the shock has to be interpreted and acted upon by insiders.
Show PostOnce you reach that stage it's really really hard to break out of the bad equilibrium, I guess, because much of academic quality control is bound up in processes of social control. Pre-publication peer review won't help, but then neither will post-publication open review or deliberative processes.

There's also a related phenomenon wherein the culture is bullying or abusive, like a frat with hazing rituals, which also ends up positively selecting for bad stuff and engaging in actively bad pedagogical practices. So they can go together! But I think they needn't.)
Show PostI think it can happen to an academic field that you get multiple generations of bad work or shoddy standards enshrined, meaning that the gate-keepers and those training the next generation are kind of anti-selecting for quality and anti-nurturing in their pedagogy.
