I think about how growing up, the bulk of actual bullies I noticed were rich kids who could get whatever they asked for. They could have things we didn't and expected that alone to amaze others. Their targets? Anyone with far less that managed to outshine them in some way. They crave sycophants.

yup - especially if you get rich young, where the world shaping itself to your whims becomes your "normal", and so anything not going how you want it is an attack on your sense-of-self that's likely to provoke an attack/defence reaction

yes, emphatically; this has been my working theory about why the rich are Like That for a while now - and i think it generalizes further than just the rich. living in an environment that insulates you from every enriching challenge to your sense of self leaves your ego undeveloped and hollow.
