They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

in terms of information environment, I don't think someone switching from, say, CNN to TNR is going to get much clarity unless they are trained in how to interpret news sources. feeling like a newsroom should present a unified front with details like this, kind of like a style guide but for facts
