Why did the Giants core hitter group get off to such bad starts? Was it just bad luck that led to all of them slumping? I don't think so. There was a concerted effort in the winter and in ST to get their swings flatter and for some more aggressive in approach. Backfired, especially with Chapman.

Interesting note on 14th round pick Alex Solis (150k bonus) and plenty of other Giants arms (Bolemon, Laroche, George, Bryans, Lalane). This is what I had on him in my review write up:

The Giants won 65 games, but BaseRuns estimates that teams with their hitting and pitching usually win about 79. The largest gap in MLB since 2002. Gaps that large rarely last. With similar talent, about 76 wins is a reasonable baseline next year, so need about 10 more for WC3 contention.

I’ve dedicated all of my limited free time to this over the past couple of months and am coming to an unexpected conclusion. For hitters, knowing PA, H, HR, K, BB from prior seasons can give you a projection that is ~90% as accurate a modern model for projecting talent and 85% at playing time.
