I promise it's simple! You have a company worth 100$. I own 1%. You have a liability to me of 1% of 100$. So, a 1$ liability. Tomorrow, your company invents fusion. Now it is worth $100 million. I still have 1%, but that 1% is worth $1 million. Your liabilities are way up! You are not worse off.
