Show PostMentoring will look more like discussing deep ideas with smart junior colleagues and less like checking their computations for stray minus signs. I think that's an exciting prospect for even the self-centered researchers and justifies the cost of hiring grad students.
Show PostThis because students will (a) outsource more and more of the grunt work to AI (b) use it to improve their understanding/knowledge. So profs will end up with a research group of bright young colleagues who can help further their research programs with new ideas, while AI executes them.
Show PostProfs who care about mentorship and for sustaining academia do not think this. Those who care only about their research programs do. But even for them, the thinking is wrong. AI will accelerate student development---they will be ready to take ownership of research directions much earlier.
Show PostSome profs don't want PhD students any more. In theoretical physics, students spend most of their PhD executing the adviser's ideas. By the time they are mature enough to contribute ideas, their PhD is almost over. So the thinking is: why not use AI instead to execute ideas quicker and cheaper?
