> the man in the household was essentially eliminated, however technology only created more responsibilities for women Email — it feels to me — is the same. It's mostly women writing emails, actually reading them, AND being punished for not taking them seriously. While men mostly don't or use LLMs.
Show PostSo, if you're waiting on an email from me, blame the washing machine : )
Show PostTo that end, and per Per's post, I often say jokingly (though I'm not actually joking) that I can stay on top of email *or* do the rest of my job. bsky.app/profile/peng...
Show PostEmail, I'd argue, has similarly shifted norms in ways that individualize work that used to be shared (i.e., most professors no longer have their own secretaries to handle correspondence) and that create more of it (since the expectation is that we can respond immediately and field more requests).
Show PostThrough these norm shifts, the washing machine individualized the work of washing clothes (pushing it mostly onto individual women to do for their families, at a time when they were also joining the workforce in droves), and created more of that work. Hence, laundry still feeling drudgerous today.
