A strong argument for citizens’ assemblies discussing our future EU relationship… In Ireland, assemblies: “helped inform public debate before the referendums, so the country talked to itself before it voted, and the result is remembered for its maturity rather than its bitterness.”
Show PostWe can't seriously expect people to choose rail when it costs three times as much as flying. We need a clear duty on the Secretary of State and Great British Railways, to improve the affordability of travelling by train and make fares fair.
Show Postexcellent article & absolutely right. There’s no clever constitutional fix that could prevent us leaving again, that’s true, but a fair & honest politics would help create the right landscape for us to join and stay joined. Proportional representation would stop a single party taking us out again.
Show PostAnd frankly, if after trying to help people understand the benefits of the euro, they still won't accept it as part of joining the EU again and be a committed member, then I don't think we're ready to join the EU again. The EU deserves better than that.
Show PostAnd if we can't build sufficient support for membership on those terms, then we shouldn't hold a referendum. We wait until people are ready. That's the point I'm making in the article. I don't want to win a referendum for something people haven't actually consented to.
