No the thread only mentioned Venzuelas importance because of it's enormous oil reserves. My point was that the economic reserves are much smaller because much of it is too heavy. Which is also why they produce such a small fraction of their 'reserves'

They don't have the infrastructure which is why today Trump is telling oil companies they *might* be refunded but the US govt if they come in and build.
Show PostAgree, but the tread pretends it is driven by some long term strategy. In reality it is a decision made on the fly by one man, with the aim of making him look strong and to deflect attention from his domestic problems.
Show PostSounds compelling until you realize Venezuela exports 0.5 mil barrels/day which is only no 22 in the world and a small fraction of world oil production. OPEC alone produces about 60 times more pr day. Most of Venezuela's enormous oil reserves are very heavy oil which is uneconomic to extract.
