I think those questions only matter when it comes to evaluating scientists’ contributions. We have become publication obsessed because that’s how we justify asking for funding and promotions.

If you tell PIs of big labs “you can only publish 5 papers per year but you won’t have to apply for a grant again” I think we will suddenly find ourselves being very comfortable with having our names on fewer papers.

There are actually many simple ways to cap pubs per lab, but caps directly conflict with incentives, which I suggest should be included in any such conversations.
