OTD in 1859, abolitionist John Brown led a band of followers attempting to seize the US arsenal at Harpers Ferry, VA. Brown hoped to incite & arm rebellions by enslaved people, which did not materialize. He was captured; tried for treason, murder, & inciting insurrection; and executed. Image: LOC.
