@yassmin.bsky.socialI have been thinking a lot recently about how racism tries to manifest in ways that are plausibly deniable, and the basic thing of "different standards for different people" seems like one of the biggest. Unambiguous in the way Arday was treated vs other academics w/ similar issues. But so common
Show PostBut ultimately, it's in no way about changing media outlets, or convincing them to introspect, or even pushing for regulation (it won't happen). I think it's about informing *everyone else* that certain media outlets are basically the organised, fully-staff arm of ethno-nationalist movements
Show PostI think it'd be worthwhile, someone who has the time and skill, compiling all the media abuse and bullying that occurred around Jason Arday. Honestly it's one of the only ways to kill the 'plausible deniability' bit ("it was just normal criticism") people everywhere (here included) are doing
Show PostEven after spending a pretty decent chunk of my own time collating the data to *prove* the double-standard that was clearly motivated by racist urges: Australia's media industry just stared at it blankly. It's amazing how they can't even acknowledge what is happening. Same during covid:
Show PostOne comment I CONSTANTLY saw around that furore was the 'truth defence' "Oh, so we can't criticise people now??" stuff Of course it's a tactic. But it made me think: what about the actual truth here? That so many journalists are racist predators, hunting in packs to eliminate non-white people
