One thing you learn from reading the academic literature on parental estrangement is that it's rarely *just* about events from childhood. Most adults are willing to reconcile with their problematic parents as long as they can acknowledge their mistakes and own up to them. A lot of them refuse.

Also most times, the estranged children are like, "dude, I'm still coming to terms with X as insane abuse, can y'all leave me alone" while the shitty parent is like "I got them 10,000 dolls for their 11th birthday!" and leaves out "I burned all their toys 3 days before."
