They picked on/bullied quite a few autistic/ND authors, and their ableism was starting to get called out, so my theory is they latched onto autistic-centered project as a smokescreen to be like, "I can't be ableist if I'm autistic too," which obviously, you can be.

If they are writing in-character and colloquially, usage might be inconsistent and out of step with current usage, to better reflect a particular character and setting. Still, should probably have at least been standardized by the editor.
