The answer to "where was Sherlock Holmes for 3 years" is "doin' stuff." That's not a "lore gap," it's a space left deliberately untouched because it emphasizes both a shocking absence and its equally shocking (in Holmes' specific case, post Reichenbach) return. Also, Elementary is under appreciated
