It’s telling that the cut-off parents in these sob stories are almost always cut off by daughters—we socialize women not just to absorb abuse, but to misinterpret abuse as bids for care. Meanwhile men are socially expected to distance themselves from their natal families anyway.

Show PostI was originally going to do my PhD remotely but ended up moving here to Germany because of an unscrupulous employer forcing my departure from the US. I'm so glad I'm here, though, because I have an awesome group of fellow doctoral candidates in the lab that I'm excited to be on the journey with.
