Bow Street Runner Henry Goddard was the first detective in the UK to use ballistics to solve a case (first documented case). By comparing bullets at an attempted burglary in 1835, he worked out that the intended victim, butler Joseph Randall, had staged the attack to gain a reward from his employer.
